Is Artificial Turf Difficult To Install? Can I Install It Myself?

Oct 15, 2025

For small areas, such as yards or balconies, installation is relatively simple and can be done by those with basic DIY skills. For large areas or sports fields, installation is more complex. It is recommended to hire professionals to ensure proper drainage, flatness, and long-lasting performance.

1. Difficulty Analysis

Small areas (balconies, small yards):

Relatively easy to install. Simply clean the surface, lay the turf flat, and secure edges.

Minimal tools required: tape measure, shovel, scissors/utility knife, glue or nails.

Large areas or sports fields (football fields, tennis courts):

More complex; professional installation is recommended.

Requires proper ground leveling, drainage systems, turf seaming, and correct use of glue or seam tape.

Poor installation may lead to bumps, lifting edges, or poor drainage, affecting appearance and durability.

2. Can I Install It Myself? A Self-Assessment

Ask yourself these questions:

What is the size of the project? A small, rectangular patio area (under 100 sq. ft.) is very manageable. A large, complex backyard (500+ sq. ft.) is a massive undertaking.

What is my skill level? Are you comfortable with basic landscaping, using a shovel, a level, and a power tamper? Have you done projects that require precise measurements and cuts?

What is my physical condition? Can you handle 8+ hours of digging, shoveling gravel, and kneeling?

Do I have the time? A professional crew can install a lawn in 1-2 days. A DIY project will likely take a weekend or two for a small area, and potentially several weekends for a larger one.

Do I have the right tools? You'll need more than just a shovel.

  *  Installation Steps Overview

Prepare the ground: Remove debris and weeds, ensure flatness.

Lay base layer: Gravel or weed barrier for stability and drainage.

Cut the turf: Trim according to area size, leaving seam allowance.

Seam or secure edges: Use professional glue or seam tape to connect turf pieces.

Add infill (optional): Provides support and stability, especially for sports turf.

Brush the fibers: Stand the grass upright for a natural look.

Artificial turf is moderately difficult to install, but a dedicated DIYer with good physical fitness and attention to detail can absolutely do it themselves.
