What's The Difference Between Sand-filled And Fill-free Artificial Lawns?

Aug 06, 2025

I. Structure and materials

Sand-filled type

Length and density of grass silk: The grass silk is longer, usually about 19~20mm, but the density is relatively small.

Filling material: It needs to be filled with quartz sand to stabilize the grass silk and enhance the performance of the court.

Filling-free type

Length and density of grass silk: The grass silk is relatively short, about 13~15mm, but the density is very high.

Filling material: No additional filling material is required, relying on the density of grass silk and the bottom support layer to provide stability.

II. Performance and application

Sand-filled type

Elasticity and stability: good elasticity, suitable for high-level competition. However, the distribution of filling materials may not be uniform at the beginning, and the filling materials need to be supplemented regularly and evenly distributed.

Usage scenario: suitable for professional competitions and high-intensity use.

Filling-free type

Elasticity and consistency: The elasticity is slightly inferior to that of the sand-filled type, but the consistency is high, suitable for daily use and casual competition.

Usage scenario: suitable for daily leisure and low-intensity use.

III. Cost and maintenance

Sand-filled type

Initial cost: relatively high, because filling materials need to be purchased.

Maintenance cost: The long-term maintenance cost is also high, because it requires regular replenishment and uniform distribution of filling materials.

Filling-free type

Initial cost: low, because there is no need to buy filling materials.

Maintenance cost: also low, just need routine cleaning and combing of grass silk.
